Thousands of people descended upon the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia Tuesday afternoon to get the first look at the newly minted Democratic duo of Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who Harris just announced as her running mate in the morning.
Despite the heat, people were happy to camp in line. The crowd exceeded the 10,000 seat capacity, leading organizers to set up an overflow space to watch on screens, which was also packed to capacity.
DNC Chair Jamie Harrison kicked off the night, emphasizing the importance of this election, the incredible candidates, and what needs to be done to win.
Harrison was followed by Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, who brought the crowd to their feet with a rousing speech welcoming all of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia. She talked about the opposition, quoting James Baldwin: “I can’t believe what you say because I see what you do,” referencing the other side’s frequent distractions and lies. She concluded by saying, “Our VP has made her choice. Period. Let’s get behind them.” The crowd agreed vociferously.
Senator Bob Casey took the stage to criticize his opponent Dave McCormick, who has seemingly spent more time living outside of PA than in it. Casey stressed the importance of knowing the people you represent, which means living in the same state. He also discussed his plan to tackle “greedflation,” pointing out the current price gouging affecting consumers.
Next up, and in true John Fetterman fashion, the PA Senator and Pittsburgh native confessed to being a Yinzer, which was met with the traditional Philly greeting to anyone from Pittsburgh: loud but friendly (no, seriously!) boos. His point was that despite our differences, tonight we are all team Harris.
Perhaps one of the most anticipated speakers of the evening was Josh Shapiro, who received an especially warm welcome. Shapiro looked taken aback by the crowd’s roaring response. He passionately criticized the opposition’s policies and their supposed love of freedom despite their endless attacks on it, from banning books to union-busting to restrictive abortion laws. He spoke of his friendship with Tim and Gwen Walz and made it clear that despite not being chosen for VP, he understands what is at stake and is ready to get to work. Many in the crowd discussed Shapiro’s future, seeing him as a likely future presidential contender.
Finally, VP Harris and Tim Walz took the stage to almost deafening applause. Harris championed the until quite recently somewhat unknown Minnesota governor, outlining his credentials and life story. Walz is a veteran, a teacher, a coach, a former congressman, and a governor. She talked about his strengths and what they are facing as underdogs in the next 91 days. Harris also differentiated herself from her opponent, pointing out her experience as a prosecutor and referring to Trump’s multiple felonies, charges, and convictions.
Walz, moved by the enthusiasm from the crowd, talked about his upbringing and the importance of minding your own business in relation to the MAGA Right’s obsession with people’s private lives. He criticized his opponent JD Vance and pointed out the Right’s “weird behaviors.” Walz also made a light-hearted joke at Vance’s expense, showing a side that many found relatable. He briefly mentioned his admiration for Bruce Springsteen, prompting the crowd to respond with a loud “BRUUUCE!” Many attendees left as newfound fans of Walz, impressed by his strong speaking skills.
Throughout the night, the crowd chanted “Not Going Back!” and “Lock Him Up!” showcasing the enthusiasm and unity among the supporters of the Democratic ticket as they gear up for the election.
