In the aftermath of January 6th, Harvard law professor Alan Jenkins had a deep fear: what if the insurrection at the Capitol had been successful? To answer the question, Jenkins teamed up with visual artist Gan Golan and illustrator Will Rosado to write 1/6: The Graphic Novel, which according to the authors, “chillingly illustrates how close we came to authoritarian rule in America and the threats to our democracy that we still face.”
On Tuesday, November 12 at 7 p.m., both Jenkins and Golan will take part in an online panel titled, “The Insurrection as American History: Teaching January 6th in the Classroom”, which will look into topics such as how the insurrection should be taught in American history classes and how to counter disinformation in the classroom. Sari Beth Rosenberg, a public school teacher and PBS NewsHour Classroom contributor, will also be on the panel, and the event will be moderated by Bucks County Beacon Editor Cyril Mychalejko. Access for the event can be found here.
“With the recent election fresh in our minds, panelists will explore why this event belongs in history books as a pivotal moment in America’s democracy, and educators’ roles in countering disinformation in the classroom,” stated a press release about the event. “Plus, teachers interested in diving deeper can request the 1/6 Educational Guide to bring these lessons to their own students.”
The event is free and open to the public, but especially for teachers in Pennsylvania “and anyone interested in the crossroads of education, history, and truth in the classroom today.”
