Tom Marden brought gold home to Bucks County for his air speed race, flying No. 66, “Second Hand,” in the Biplane Division at the National Championship Air Races held September 10-14 in Rosewell, New Mexico.
At a regular business meeting Wednesday, Bucks County Commissioners honored Marden’s achievement.
“In addition to [the win] Tom is the manager of Van Sant Airport in Erwinna, which is one of the airports the county owns,” explained Bob Harvie, president of Bucks County Commissioners.
Marden’s winning time was 219.9 mph in the six lap race.
Marden said Andrew McVicker, who is also affiliated with Van Sant, flew “Yellow Jersey” to fourth place in the Gold Races.
This year’s national competition was hosted by the Reno Air Racing Association.
Harvie said Marden’s leadership after becoming the Van Sant manager two years ago “has not gone unnoticed.”
“We’re sure your exciting approach will continue to bring positive growth to the local aviation community,” said Harvie.
Marden praised the county and its agencies during the meeting.
“Your tireless effort has kept Van Sant Airport and the historic aviation community in Bucks County thriving,” said Marden.
Biplanes date to The Wright Brothers and the early days of human aviation. Biplanes are built with one wing above the other, and the wings are typically connected by struts and wires. A vintage aircraft’s cockpit is open.
The 1903 Wright Flyer, or Kitty Hawk Flyer, helmed by Wilbur and Orville Wright, is credited with launching the pioneer aviation era at the time, birthing the future of human flight.
Vintage biplanes are often used in air shows and at various competitions. For information about them visit the National Air and Space Museum Smithsonian website.
Marden noted that Van Sant Airport “continues to inspire people from all walks of life in their future endeavors.”
“We’ve had everybody from generals to airline pilots that have had their start at Van Sant … thank you for everything you do for the community. It has economic impact and personal impact. Van Sant is truly a gem,” Marden said.
Van Sant Airport, located at 516 Cafferty Rd. in Erwinna, is a public airport hosting rides, instruction and a variety of events. It is owned by the Bucks County Airport Authority.
