Governor Josh Shapiro’s administration said in letters sent Tuesday that state-supported universities, libraries, early-childhood education programs and county health departments also will see delays.
The funding freeze had been challenged by several lawsuits as educators, Congress members from both parties and others called for the administration to release the money.
Smith joined former Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona and Los Angeles Unified School District school board member Nick Melvoin on a national virtual press conference hosted by Defend America Action.
“It is deeply unethical for a sitting school board member to be hired by members of her own board to a position at the local tech school,” said Pennridge School District parent Laura Foster.
Many clubs have found ways to keep their summer programs open, but there isn’t the same hope for the after-school programming this fall.
Fully funding this program isn’t just about fairness. It’s about protecting the quality of education for all PA students.
Pennsylvania school districts rely on both state and federal funding. Both remain uncertain.
“It is heartbreaking to see Congress embrace a budget bill that strips meals and health care away from children and families to fund massive tax breaks for the super wealthy and an unaccountable private school voucher program,” said PSEA President Aaron Chapin.
PA FIRE’s goal is to create “a groundbreaking, statewide initiative to protect immigrant rights, expand vital services and drive long-term systems change across the commonwealth.”
“Families are feeling the pressure, and so are the systems meant to support them,” said Elizabeth Zbinden, Food Program Manager with Bucks County Opportunity Council.
