Democratic U.S. Senator John Fetterman checked himself into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for clinical depression Wednesday night. The junior senator from Pennsylvania had received in-patient treatment one week ago after experiencing dizziness and physicians ruled out the occurrence of a stroke or seizure activity.
During his 2022 run for the U.S. Senate, and four days before the May primary, the former lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania suffered a life-threatening stroke. Fetterman recovered, continued his campaign and prevailed in the general election against GOP contender Mehmet Oz.
Thinking of Senator Fetterman & the courage it takes to seek mental health treatment when you need it.
It ain't easy, and because of stigma & vitriol in politics, he'll get enormous blowback, but he's a role model for the millions of Americans who struggle with depression. ❤️
“While John has experienced depression off and on throughout his life, it only became severe in recent weeks,” said Adam Jentleson, his chief of staff, in a statement. He added that Fetterman followed the recommendation for inpatient care at Walter Reed after an evaluation on Monday by Dr. Brian P. Monahan, the attending physician in Congress. After what he’s been through in the past year, there’s probably no one who wanted to talk about his own health less than John. I’m so proud of him for asking for help and getting the care he needs. pic.twitter.com/SfuwWTSUcG

“John agreed, and he is receiving treatment on a voluntary basis,” Jentleson added.
“It’s not easy for anyone to be open about mental health challenges. But I am so proud of him for asking for help and taking steps to get the care he needs,” said his wife Gisele Barreto Fetterman in an email to supporters.
Fetterman has been ridiculed by GOP naysayers and trolls immediately following and throughout his recovery from the stroke. In the short time I’ve worked with John Fetterman, I’ve been struck by his resilience and heart. John is doing exactly what he should do, which is seek help.

Seeking help when you need it is a sign of strength, not weakness, something that John is demonstrating for all of us,” said Senator Tina Davis, (D-MN) in a Tweet.

Fetterman’s political career dates back to 2006 when he was elected mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, from 2006 through 2019. He was elected the Commonwealth’s lieutenant governor and held the seat from 2019 to 2023.
“I stand by John Fetterman and his family,” said Senator Richard J. Durbin, (D-IL). “This is an unimaginable challenge that he has faced in life. He deserves the very best in professional care, and I am sure he will get it.”
Here are some more reactions found on Twitter applauding his courage to seek help:
While it breaks my heart to hear what he’s going through, I am so proud of my friend @JohnFetterman. I’ve seen too many of my soldiers succumb to depression to not understand how important it is to seek help. Senator Fetterman is demonstrating so much courage by being transparent about his depression and choice to seek help. We need more leaders who can be open about their struggles like this. https://t.co/A1qZ1AzLD4
— Alejandra Caraballo (@Esqueer_) February 16, 2023 John Fetterman isn't the first Senator to suffer from depression. But he's probably the first to publicly acknowledge he's getting treatment for it.
— Sam Stein (@samstein) February 16, 2023 We’re happy Sen. Fetterman is getting the help he needs, and being upfront about his depression. This type of honesty helps de-stigmatize mental health https://t.co/qujVqv4fOQ
— Appodlachia (@appodlachia) February 16, 2023 Fetterman's openness about this is going to help so many people. Something I never thought I'd see from a sitting Senator, and something we need to see more of from our elected officials. I'm glad he's getting the care he needs and wish him and his family only the best. https://t.co/xmXwIbWv80
— Melissa Ryan (@MelissaRyan) February 16, 2023 I'm fortunate to call @JohnFetterman a friend, and I'm damn proud of him for having the courage to rebuke the stigma around mental health & do right by himself to seek treatment. He's no doubt helping other people make that same decision & I'm proud as ever to call him my Senator
