Quaker Group Offers Nonviolent Direct Action Training for Activists

“We who in engage in nonviolent direct action are not the creators of tension. We merely bring to the surface the hidden tension that is already alive," wrote Martin Luther King, Jr. in his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”

Environmental activists are holding weekly virtual training sessions on nonviolent direct action in the lead up to their “biggest mobilization yet” against Vanguard, according to an announcement on social media.

Earth Quaker Action Team is a grassroots organization from Philadelphia involved in the international Vanguard SOS campaign targeting the Malvern-based investment firm because it has poured billions of dollars into the fossil fuel industry, thus exacerbating destructive climate change. Training sessions will be held weekly on Thursdays from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. starting January 25 until February 29.

“We think you’ll find these trainings helpful, whether you’ll be joining us in action in southeastern PA sometime soon or participating in collective action somewhere else,” wrote EQAT in its announcement.

“We’re demanding that Vanguard use its power as a shareholder to push the companies it invests in to make meaningful progress on reducing emissions, exit its investments in fossil fuel companies that don’t transition, and offer climate-safe funds as mainstream investment options,” wrote activist Hans Peters in a column for the Bucks County Beacon
