D20 Burlesque is hosting “Pride is a Riot” on June 13, a politically minded pride event at the Blank Space Community Center in Yardley. The event is 18+ and will feature queer vendors, live bands and drag performances.
D20 Burlesque is a play on the classic Burlesque show in which dancers wear elaborate costumes and interact with the crowd in a satirical manner. D20 Burlesque blends this concept with specific themes to create unique performances that are constantly changing.
“Every Pride season I think it’s important to remember that Pride was a riot,” said D20 Burlesque Founder Anja Keister. “Although I love Pride events that are just celebrations, I wanted to put together something where you could feel like something was being done.”
Keister has brought together BuxMont DSA, Bucks Stand Up, and ACABBY Masc Block to organize and unify the LGBTQIA+ community towards a common goal.
“I want to challenge allies to show up and fight for LGBTQIA+ rights in their everyday lives,” said Keister. “I put together a space where the queer community can come together to celebrate ourselves in a way where we aren’t just getting rainbow shots and being handed cheaply made pride flags, but are actually organizing, supporting other queer artists and being visibly vocal about how the administration is stripping out existence from America.”
Tattoo artist Frith Fremen from Needles Art Studio will also be giving specially themed tattoo flashes. The event will act as a safe space for left-leaning LGBTQIA+ members.
