OPINION: Trump and Project 2025 Need Pennsylvania to Carry Out Their Plans to Dismantle Democracy

Trump and his allies at the Heritage Foundation are working overtime “to disenfranchise voters and sow confusion about the 2024 election.” Pennsylvania is at the center of those efforts.

Donald Trump’s mental deterioration raises the question, would he be able to carry out his ideas as president? His ally the Heritage Foundation prepared for this by setting out a detailed, step-by-step plan, Project 2025, to gut our freedoms that anyone could follow. It doesn’t matter to Project 2025 that Trump is unstable. Heritage is prepared to replace thousands of government professionals with MAGA loyalists to carry out its mission – with or without an increasingly unstable figurehead.

Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts told the New York Times he would like to see President Trump re-institute “Schedule F,” which Trump signed in the waning days of his term, but President Joe Biden reversed. Schedule F would allow the Trump administration to fire experienced government professionals and replace them with Trump toadies — estimates range from 50,000 to the hundreds of thousands of specialists to be dismissed. For the past year Heritage has been vetting applicants for loyalty and training them in how to carry out Project 2025’s agenda.

And Project 2025 is working overtime “to disenfranchise voters and sow confusion about the 2024 election.” Pennsylvania is at the center of those efforts because many people see the road to the White House as having to go through the Keystone State. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court just rebuffed a Republican effort to prevent the state from allowing voters to cast provisional ballots if their mail-in ballots are rejected due to defects. Bucks County is one of the Pennsylvania counties that allows voters to fix errors on their mail in ballots to assure they are counted; not all counties do. Project 2025 is agitating to have former Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar prosecuted for helping voters make their voices count with provisional ballots in 2020. This threat is meant  to intimidate state voting officials. As a spokesperson for the secretary of state’s office stated, it is “a clear attempt to disenfranchise Pennsylvania voters.” Voter suppression and disenfranchisement is the only way to seize power given how unpopular their authoritarian plans are for the nation.

For example, Trump and Project 2025 have both promised to abolish the Department of Education. Moms for Liberty co-founder Tiffany Justice, a Heritage ally, is under consideration by Trump to be Secretary of Education. Trump spoke at the 2023 M4L summit in Philadelphia and the 2024 summit in Washington, D.C. It was at the Philadelphia summit that Justice told a cheering crowd, “One of our moms in a newsletter quotes Hitler. I stand with that mom.” Sound familiar? Trump told Former Marine General John F. Kelly, his longest serving chief of staff, that “Hitler did some good things” and expressed the wish that he could have generals like those who obeyed Hitler.

He then recently announced he would deploy the National Guard and the military against “the enemy within” — his political opponents. Imagine if he is able to appoint the type of generals he’d like.

Trump’s dark vision for the country is in fact very clear to those who worked with him. And they call it by it’s rightful name: fascism. Retired Army General Mark Milley, who served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under Trump, says Trump is “fascist to the core.” The aforementioned Kelly agrees that Trump is a fascist. General James Mattis, who served as Trump’s Secretary of Defense, concurs with General Kelly’s assessment that Trump is “the most dangerous person ever.”

As visitors to Philadelphia flock to visit the Liberty Bell, Trump is absorbed with retribution and Heritage is obsessed with dismantling our liberties as Americans. We need to get involved and to vote to protect our freedoms.

Independent media is essential, especially in an election year. It strengthens our democracy and holds our leaders accountable.

We keep voters informed through our in-depth coverage, and make it easy for our readers to be prepared to cast their vote.

And it wouldn’t be possible without you.
