This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things: How Palisades SD Wound Up Going All Virtual For School Board Meetings

"I mean, this is just aggressive to a level that's insane."

Here, then, amidst so many tales of anti-vaxx, anti-mask parents in Bucks and across the land freaking out, acting out, losing their marbles, and so on, is another one of those.

Last week, the community around Palisades School District held their regular school board meeting. Usually, these are recorded, but there is no recording of this particular meeting.

As the meeting got underway, some parents, said to be aligned with ReOpen Bucks (but perhaps more importantly known to be aligned with chaos and suffering), were refusing to wear masks. And so Shari Vandergas, the school board member in charge of the meeting on this evening, had no choice but to cancel the meeting and make it go virtual, to comply with the state’s mandate.

This was not great, but understandable. This was already an established protocol. This is what they’re supposed to do, in the event of… people acting like this.

“Our board meetings had [already been available] virtual because people refuse to wear masks in the meeting, in spite of the, you know, health department’s mandate. And yeah, and it got really ugly and awful,” said one parent who’d already tuned in online.

But there was more. When the meeting was supposed to restart virtually, there were unmasked parents, who were now refusing to leave in addition to their prior refusal to, for the love God, just put on a goddamned mask. So they had to cancel the whole meeting.

“I can understand not wanting to wear a mask like, right? I completely disagree with you. But I can understand that,” the parent said. “and like, I would be willing to listen to this stuff. I mean, this is just aggressive to a level that’s insane.”

“I called into the meeting both times, I was not there in person. Off the top of my head, I don’t know anyone who was because the crazy was anticipated. There were people there unmasked who had active Covid in their household. Insanity.”

It bears repeating: The crazy is now anticipated.

Now, for the foreseeable future, Palisades SD will only have virtual meetings. Which are not nice. But then, nice things are only for nice people.

So fucking be nice already.
