Residents in Pennsylvania’s 1st Congressional District are no longer surprised to see their congressman, Republican Brian Fitzpatrick, prioritize his political career over the best interests of his constituents, and Tuesday was no exception.
For a second time, Fitzpatrick voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas absent any evidence that would constitute high crimes and misdemeanors. The articles of impeachment passed in a 214-213 vote.
The House GOP attempted and failed to impeach Mayorkas last week.
The impeachment articles are expected to be rejected by the Senate’s Democratic majority.
“Fitzpatrick claims he is bipartisan, but instead of standing up for solutions, he is participating in a meaningless media circus,” said Kierstyn Zolfo of Indivisible Bucks County. “We deserve better than this mockery of leadership.”
The impeachment by House Republicans, and the blocking of a new bill addressing immigration by Senate Republicans, are viewed as components of Donald Trump’s strategy to maintain support from his base as the 2024 Presidential election approaches.
